Old Fashioned Dounughts

There's this awesome little bakery in my home town that make the best, I mean the best, old fashioned doughnuts. But how delicious do these homemade apple cider doughnuts look? I'd really like to try them this weekend... Deb from Smitten Kitchen is seriously one of my heroes.

Noooooooooooooooooooo!

I can't believe it. Conde Nast announced today that they are closing down Gourmet Magazine, which has been published since 1947. How can they do that? I'm so sad. And frankly, I think it's a awfully bad move on CN's part. I'm devastated.

Romulo Yanes for Gourmet

Did you know that you can buy old Gourmet photographs online? I am looking for a little framed something to put above our kitchen sink and was totally floored by these photos by Romulo Yanes. As you can see I had a hard time choosing what to post! They are kind of pricey, however, at $180 a pop.

Summer Fruit

Sometimes, there is really nothing better than eating a bowl of fresh berries for breakfast. Summer, oh how you are glorious!

Donna Hay

When I was in high school, my mother taught me how to cook. My very first cook book was Donna Hay's The New Cook, and it is full of recipes I still use frequently. The pictures and styling are beyond gorgeous, and the recipes are really, really good! I've just ordered her New Food Fast. Can't wait to try it out! In the meantime, here's one of my favorite recipes, which is great for when the weather gets warmer. It's easy and fast, too:
Rare Beef and Cellophane Noodle Salad serves 4
1 lb thick rump steak 6 1/2 oz. cellophane noodles 1 mango, peeled 1/2 cup Thai basil leaves (regular basil works, too) 1/2 cup mint leaves 1/3 cup cilantro Dressing: 4 Tbs lime juice 3 Tbs Soy Sauce 2 Tbs brown sugar 1 green chilli, seeded and chopped
Heat grill or frypan on high heat for 2 mintues. Place steak in pan and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side or until juices are sealed in and meat is cooked medium rare. Set aside. Place noodles in boiling water and allow to stand for 5 minutes before draining. Chop mango finely and combine with noodles, basil, mint, and cilantro. To make dressing, place lime juice, soy sauce, sugar and chilli in a bowl and mix to combine. Slice steak thinly, and toss with noodle mixture and dressing. {photo by Con Poulos for Donna Hay}

The Silver Spoon

(all photos from Silver Spoon)
Have you guys checked out this cookbook, The Silver Spoon? A new English translation of Il Cucchiaio d'Argento, Italy's top selling cookbook these past fifty years, the book is a veritable bible of all things yummy. Seriously, if I had to live on one cookbook alone for the rest of my life, this would be it. FYI: some of the recipes don't quite tell you how long things are really going to take, as in, "my Italian Grandmother would say the proper way to cook this is for eight hours;" so just be prepared. But for me food is all about love, and the good kind of love takes time to make. The book's beautiful design and mouth watering photos will make you salivate for more... (PS-click on the photos for bigger versions of photos and the actual recipes!)

The Fine Cheese Co., an Anglomaniac Post

If you ever find yourself in Bath you must run not walk to this amazing little cheese store and adjoining cafe. It's my very favorite place to sit outside, grab a coffee and take in the Georgian splendor. Plus it's painted the most perfect minty green that only seems to exist in England.

Fortnum & Mason , an Anglomaniac Post

An English institution, Fortnum's is the original department store. I when I say original I mean it; they were founded in 1707! And are famously known for their celebrated teas which come in beautiful little tins. If you find yourself in London I would say that the store is a must visit, and a little tin a must buy. I'm headed there tomorrow myself to stock up on real tea, i.e. the kind you can't really get in the states. You Brits (or expats) out there, you guys know what I mean.

sleepycat

I'm a sleepy cat today. Maybe it's because of all the good eating and drinking I did last night with A. We went out to our favorite restaurant and I had an endive salad with grapefruit and then handmade gnocchi with lamb. He had cabbage salad with apples and gorgonzola and then and yummy fish stew. It was soooo good....

happy thanksgiving!

Today's post, besides being all about Thanksgiving, is all about sisters. Yiyi, my sister-in-law Langan's little sister, and I are writing this post together today. Yiyi , who is seven years old, is thankful for her family, and her dog and her two cats. Yiyi is also thankful for the world. Honora is thankful for Yiyi's help with this post, and for her and her loved ones' health and happiness. She is thankful for the world, too. Today is the beautiful Halley's birthday. Halley is Honora's big sister and today she is 33. Honora is most thankful to have such a wonderful sister who is also her best friend.

notes from the weekend

Our friends Marcella and J. came out to visit for the weekend. It was fabulous. We drank lots of wine, we sat outside in the unseasonably warm weather (we're talking tank tops here people). We carved pumpkins and gave candy to cute little kids, one of whom was dressed up as Sarah Palin. We went to a Halloween party as the Beastie Boys from the Sabotage video and got some mad props for our costumes. We went for a beautiful hike and topped it all off with some awesome enchiladas and the best margaritas this side of the Rio Grande. If only every weekend could be spent with such amazing friends.

l'España + la comida = el Cielo

I fell in love with Spain and all things Spanish when I bit into my first authentic gambas a la plancha at the amazing tapas restaurant, Ciudad Condal, in Barcelona. Mmmm. I especially love Spanish food. The jamón, the olive oil, the paella, the tortilla española, manchego. Hell, I even ate the octopus carpaccio. That's why I am just over the moon about the new PBS show, Spain... On the Road Again. It's just so pleasant and fun to watch that A. and I have become completely addicted. But be warned: you better have some vino tinto and some manchego on hand at home because as you watch Batali, Bittman, Paltrow and Bassols eat their way across the country you're gonna want some of your own tapa to share in the good time.
