life in a suitcase

You guys, I have never ever been so busy/exhausted/exhilarated from my travels this summer.  So far I've been to one graduation, two weddings, three continents, four world cup soccer games, and have been on 10 planes.  That's right, I said 10.  One of those trips took 30 hours.  And it's not even over yet.  Next week the travel recommences and I get on flight number 11, en route to wedding number 3.  

In the meantime, I am working on posting some pictures of my trip to South Africa, in my nonexistent free time. It's hard for me to even describe how incredible and inspiring SA was, not to mention the World Cup.  It was the most difficult traveling I've ever done, but sometimes the things that are hardest are the things you feel the most grateful for.  I will try to post more soon...

I'll be working on a new book project about two things I do constantly: daydreaming and wanderlust. It's going to be cool! Here's a sneak peak.

Final Pictures

These are two of my very favorite pictures from Peru. They were taken in the old Inca village of Ollantaytambo. We had a beautiful few days here, staying at a little hotel right on a river, and fell asleep to a roaring Urubamba River every night.

More Peru!

The Incas were a truly remarkable civilization whose influence is very much alive in the modern day Peru, especially around Cusco. Their work with stones, in particular, is incredible! They built massive structures that have withstood a few hundreds of years of earthquakes--all by fitting the stones exactly to each other without any kind of mortar. The stones are pretty amazing to see, not to mention run your hands over!

Pictures from our trip to Peru. The first three days we spent in Cusco, which has an elevation of 11,200 feet. Cusco is in many ways the heart and soul of South America--it's where the Spanish confronted the Incas, and is a true amalgamation of the two cultures. There's lot of hullabaloo going round about the new Alice in Wonderland movie. I have mixed feelings about it, mostly because I don't always agree with Tim Burton's aesthetic sensibility. I love his darker stuff--Edward Scissorhands is particularly brilliant.

But when I think of the Victorian England, I see images borrowed from the photographs of Lewis Carroll himself, and Julia Margaret Cameron. Over the holidays I read an amazing new book, The Children's Book by AS Byatt (the author of Posession). It takes place in Victorian England, and its characters include the historical figures J.M. Barrie, William Morris, George Merrill and Edward Carpenter. It was an enchanting and beguiling time in the world, sort of a social experiment that ended with World War I.

Pic-A-Day

So I know it's been a while... what can I say? I'm a busy bee: grad school, working on a novel, busy designing and hand-binding books. The last thing I feel like doing at the end of the day looking at a computer screen since it's what I do all day long. But I've hit upon an idea. I have been taking a lot of photos recently, so I'm going to be doing a pic-a-day for a little while. We'll see how it goes. Hope you are all well out there!

We went to (dun dun dun) Hawaii! Our quickie trip to Oahu was more beautiful and fun than I could have ever, ever imagined, and I simply cannot wait to go back and explore even more. I just couldn't get enough of all the colors. And the Pacific. And the flowers. And the beaches. And the fresh fish. Well, you get the idea.
